- EOS R100
And other Canon RF / RF-S mount camera bodies.
IMPORTANT: This is a vintage manual-focus lens used through a mechanical adapter. There is no electronic communication between the lens and camera, so autofocus and electronic aperture control are not available.
📌 FIELD OF VIEW – FULL FRAME
On a full-frame Canon RF camera, this remains a true 50mm field of view.
50mm is an extremely versatile focal length and is excellent for:
- portraits
- street photography
- everyday photography
- product photography
- low-light shooting
- detail shots
- creative shallow-depth-of-field images
The bright F/1.8 maximum aperture can produce strong subject separation and attractive background blur.
📌 FIELD OF VIEW – APS-C
Canon APS-C RF cameras have approximately a 1.6× crop factor.
This means the 50mm lens gives a field of view similar to an:
80mm lens on a full-frame camera
That makes it particularly well suited to:
- portraits
- head-and-shoulders shots
- detail photography
- product photography
- tighter compositions
- subject-isolation shots
The 80mm-equivalent field of view is very close to the classic short-telephoto portrait range.
📸 WHY VINTAGE / LEGACY GLASS?
If modern lenses sometimes feel a little too “perfect”, vintage Olympus Zuiko glass offers something different.
The Zuiko 50mm F/1.8 is known for its compact design, pleasing rendering, good contrast and attractive out-of-focus backgrounds.
Manual focusing also changes the way you shoot. Rather than letting the camera make every decision, you can slow down, choose your exact focus point and create images more deliberately.
Modern Canon EOS R cameras make using manual lenses surprisingly straightforward thanks to features such as magnified live view and focus-assist tools.
⚙️ HOW TO USE – QUICK SETUP
- Attach the lens and supplied adapter to your Canon EOS R camera.
- Set the camera to Manual (M) or Aperture Priority (Av) mode.
- Select your desired aperture using the aperture ring on the Olympus lens.
- Focus manually using the lens focus ring.
- Use magnified live view and/or focus peaking where available to make precise focusing much easier.
- If your Canon camera refuses to take a photograph because it cannot detect an electronic lens, enable the relevant setting that allows shooting without electronic lens communication.
- The camera will meter through the lens, so exposure can still be handled conveniently even though the lens itself is completely manual.
⚠️ PLEASE NOTE
This lens does not become an autofocus Canon RF lens when adapted.
The adapter provides the correct physical mounting and flange distance but does not add electronic functions.
Therefore:
- Manual focus only
- Aperture adjusted manually on the lens
- No lens-to-camera electronic communication
- No EXIF lens/aperture information from the lens
- No Canon lens corrections
- No electronic aperture control
This is part of the appeal of using classic vintage glass and makes it an inexpensive way to experiment with a completely different style of photography on a modern Canon mirrorless camera.
